Azalea (Rhododendron spp.) is a classic choice for Florida gardens, offering brilliant spring color with blooms in shades of pink, red, white, and purple. Well-suited to the state’s acidic soils and mild winters, azaleas thrive in partial shade and are especially striking when planted in masses under the filtered canopy of oaks or pines. Their lush, evergreen foliage provides year-round structure, while the blooms create a seasonal showstopper in early spring.
Care Needs:
- Light: Best in partial shade; protect from intense afternoon sun
- Water: Moderate; keep soil moist but not soggy
- Soil: Acidic, rich, and well-draining
- Temperature: Well-suited to North and Central Florida; protect from prolonged drought or extreme heat
- Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape
All parts contain grayanotoxins, which are toxic to humans and pets, especially dogs.
