Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) is a graceful perennial with nodding, spurred red and yellow flowers that bring a splash of color to spring gardens. Here in Florida, our native red columbine grows naturally in just three counties in the panhandle, mainly in rocky woodland areas. Blooming in early to mid-spring, its delicate flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and hawk moths. Columbine’s airy foliage and unique blooms make it a charming choice for wildflower gardens, shaded borders, and pollinator-friendly plantings.

Care Needs:

  • Light: Partial shade to full sun; prefers some shade in hotter climates
  • Water: Moderate; keep soil consistently moist but not soggy
  • Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil with organic matter
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 3–8
  • Growth Rate: Moderate
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers and prevent self-seeding if desired
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring
