Cuphea (Cuphea spp.), commonly known as cuphea, firecracker plant, or cigar plant, is a heat‑loving annual prized for its vibrant, nectar‑rich tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Blooming from late spring through fall in North Florida and South Georgia, cupheas form compact, bushy plants that work well in garden beds, borders, mixed containers, and pollinator gardens. They thrive in full sun and well‑drained soil, are moderately drought tolerant once established, and generally require minimal pruning.
Care Needs:
• Light: Full sun
• Water: Water regularly until established; once established allow soil to dry slightly between waterings
• Pruning: Lightly prune or pinch to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season for continuous blooms
