Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a small deciduous tree native to the eastern United States, including parts of Florida. It produces large, tropical-looking leaves and unique, maroon spring flowers that give way to custard-like yellow fruits in late summer. The fruit has a sweet, banana-mango flavor and is beloved by wildlife and people alike. Pawpaw is also the only host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly, making it a valuable addition to native and pollinator gardens.

Care Needs:

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade; young trees prefer some shade
  • Water: Moderate; keep soil consistently moist, especially when young
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 5–8
  • Growth Rate: Moderate
  • Pruning: Minimal; remove suckers and crossing branches as needed
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring if growth is slow
