Pyracantha (Pyracantha coccinea), commonly known as Firethorn, is a dense, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub valued for its glossy green foliage, sharp thorns, and showy clusters of red to orange berries in fall and winter. It is often used as a hedge, screen, or barrier plant and is especially effective for security plantings and wildlife-friendly landscapes. Pyracantha performs well in North Florida and provides strong seasonal interest with relatively low maintenance once established.
Care Needs
• Light: Full sun to part sun
• Water: Water regularly during establishment; moderately drought tolerant once established
• Pruning: Prune after flowering or berry display to control size and shape; wear gloves due to thorns
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring if needed
