Ficus carica, commonly known as the common fig, is a deciduous fruit tree prized for its sweet, honey-like fruit and attractive, deeply lobed foliage. Fun fact: figs are not technically fruits—they are specialized structures called syconia, with the tiny flowers hidden inside. Many common fig varieties are self-pollinating, making them easy and rewarding additions to the home garden.
Care Needs:
• Light: Full sun
• Water: Water regularly until established; once established, water deeply during extended dry periods, especially while fruit is developing
• Pruning: Prune during the dormant season to maintain shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and encourage productive new growth
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring if growth is slow; avoid excessive fertilization, which can reduce fruit production
