Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is not a true pine but a relative of the monkey puzzle tree, known for its straight trunk and perfectly symmetrical branches lined with short, inward-curving needles. Outdoors, it can reach up to 200 feet tall, while indoors it typically grows 3–8 feet and can even be trained as a bonsai. Native to Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, it thrives in warm, frost-free regions and is also popular as a graceful houseplant or living Christmas tree.

Care Needs:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light indoors; full sun to partial shade outdoors
  • Water: Moderate; keep soil evenly moist but not soggy, reducing water in winter
  • Soil: Well-draining, sandy or loamy soil
  • Temperature: Prefers mild, frost-free climates; hardy in USDA zones 10–11
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
  • Pruning: Rarely needed; remove only dead or damaged branches
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer
