Alternanthera (Alternanthera ficoidea), commonly known as Joseph’s coat, is a warm-season annual grown for its vibrant, colorful foliage rather than flowers. Its leaves range in shades of burgundy, red, purple, bronze, and chartreuse, making it an excellent choice for adding bold contrast to beds, borders, and container plantings. In North Florida and South Georgia, Alternanthera thrives in warm weather and maintains its rich color throughout the growing season.
Care Needs:
• Light: Full sun to partial sun (best color develops in full sun)
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained; avoid prolonged dry conditions
• Pruning: Pinch or trim regularly to maintain a compact, dense shape
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting and as needed during the growing season
