Cat’s Whiskers (Orthosiphon stamineus), commonly known as Java tea or cat’s whiskers, is a tropical perennial often grown as a seasonal annual in North Florida and South Georgia. It is prized for its striking spikes of tubular white to lavender flowers with long, protruding stamens that resemble a cat’s whiskers, attracting hummingbirds and pollinators. Its bushy, upright growth habit makes it ideal for garden beds, borders, and container plantings where vertical interest and continuous blooms are desired.
Care Needs:
• Light: Full sun to partial sun
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained; do not allow to dry out completely
• Pruning: Trim after flowering to encourage branching and repeat blooms
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season for healthy growth and flowering
