Chenille (Acalypha hispida), commonly known as red-hot cat’s tail or chenille plant, is a tropical annual valued for its dramatic, fuzzy, bright red flower spikes that resemble dangling caterpillars. In North Florida and South Georgia, it thrives in warm, humid conditions, producing continuous blooms throughout the growing season. Its upright, arching growth habit makes it ideal for garden beds, containers, and accent plantings where a bold splash of color is desired.
Care Needs:
• Light: Full sun to partial sun
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist; avoid letting soil dry out completely
• Pruning: Remove spent flower spikes and lightly trim to maintain shape
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to support vigorous flowering
