Cleome (Cleome hassleriana), commonly known as spider flower, is a heat-tolerant annual valued for its tall, airy growth and unique spidery blooms in shades of pink, purple, rose, and white. In North Florida and South Georgia, it thrives in full sun and summer heat, providing vertical interest and continuous color in garden beds and pollinator plantings. Its open habit and nectar-rich flowers make it especially attractive to butterflies and bees.
Care Needs:
• Light: Full sun
• Water: Moderate; water regularly until established, then water during extended dry periods
• Pruning: Deadhead to encourage additional blooms or cut back lightly to maintain shape
• Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting; additional feeding is rarely needed in moderately fertile soil
