Planting Your Fall Vegetable Garden

Planting Your Fall Vegetable Garden

Rachel Emling |

Fall is approaching and it is time to get in the spirit!

North of our state border, it is best to finish up harvesting in the fall before it gets too cold, but it is the opposite here in Florida. It is best to start planting your vegetables in August as the hot temperatures go down.

The obvious first choice is pumpkins, but there are also others that do great this time of year in Florida. Such as corn, eggplant, peppers, squash, and tomatoes. Once we get into October and November, vegetables like beets, brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, spinach, and even strawberries become great options as well!

Now, preparing your soil for vegetables in Florida can be a little tricky. Since we have more sandy soil, you will need to work in organic matter into the soil at least three weeks before planting your vegetables. We suggest using Super Compost, Earthworm Castings, Black Kow, or Mushroom Compost.

Once your vegetables are planted, we suggest using your usual techniques for planting in the fall, such as using mulch to prevent weeds and making sure the plants are getting enough water. We usually get plenty of water, but the rains tend to die down around October. It is also best to water in the morning to reduce the chances of pests and diseases.

The University of Florida has released a great guide for vegetable gardening in Florida, Florida Vegetable Gardening Guide. It will give an in depth look at how to care for your vegetables before and after you plant them. You'll also be able to find notes on specific vegetables as well.
