Fresh sod transforms a yard instantly, but keeping it healthy long-term requires more than just rolling it out. A strong start and consistent care make all the difference in how your lawn looks and performs over time. Here’s how to make sure your investment pays off.
Prep the soil
Clear weeds, loosen the soil, and grade for proper drainage. A level, well-prepared surface allows roots to establish quickly and evenly. Adding a layer of quality soil before installation can also improve root development and give your sod a better foundation from day one.
Install correctly
Lay sod in a brick pattern with seams staggered. Fit edges snugly without overlapping to avoid gaps or uneven growth. Once installed, lightly roll the sod to remove air pockets and ensure good contact with the soil beneath.
Water immediately
Give sod its first deep watering right after installation. For the first two weeks, water daily in the morning until the top few inches of soil stay consistently moist. Proper watering during this stage is critical — it’s what helps the roots knit into the soil below.
Adjust care over time
After the initial establishment period, shift to watering every other day, then gradually reduce to twice a week as roots grow deeper. Mow for the first time when the grass reaches 3 to 4 inches, and never remove more than one-third of the blade. This helps prevent stress and encourages thicker growth.
Fertilize smart
Apply a balanced fertilizer 4 to 6 weeks after installation to support strong root development. Regular feeding after that keeps your lawn healthy, green, and better able to handle seasonal stress.
Watch for pests
Newly laid sod can be more vulnerable to pests like chinch bugs and grubs. Inspect your lawn regularly, especially in warmer months, and treat early if you notice thinning, discoloration, or unusual damage.
Long-term care matters
A healthy lawn doesn’t stop at installation. Aerate annually to reduce compaction, mow at the proper height, and water deeply but less frequently to encourage deeper roots. These habits help your sod stay resilient and looking its best year-round.
