Honoring a Jacksonville Holiday Tradition: From Trad’s Christmas Magic to Liberty’s North Pole Nursery

Veda Broderick |

For generations, Christmas in Jacksonville has carried the signature scent of fresh Fraser Fir drifting out of 8178 San Jose Boulevard. Long before Liberty Landscape Supply moved in, this address belonged to Trad’s Garden Center, where Lou Trad built one of the city’s most beloved holiday traditions. Families who once toddled through the greenhouses as children now return with kids of their own, retracing the same paths lined with Christmas trees, handcrafted wreaths, and the unmistakable warmth of the season.

Lou Trad loved Christmas with a devotion that was part craftsmanship, part community spirit. He made his wreaths by hand, taking pride in every twist of pine and ribbon. In December, he transformed his garden center into a winter wonderland, decorating and filling at least four of the six greenhouses with Christmas trees, greenery, and festive displays. For many Jacksonville families, visiting Trad’s wasn’t just a stop for holiday décor, it was the official start of the season.

When Liberty Landscape Supply took over the property in 2019, they knew they were inheriting something special. Honoring the cherished tradition became a responsibility, not just an opportunity. Liberty continued the iconic Christmas offerings such as premium Fraser Fir trees, wreaths, and garland sourced from the exact same North Carolina farm that supplied Trad’s for decades. The goal was simple: help Jacksonville families decorate their homes, inside and out, with premium, thoughtfully grown plants that elevate the holiday spirit.

2025, however, marks the most exciting evolution yet: the debut of the North Pole Nursery. This elevated holiday destination expands the magic of Trad’s legacy while introducing all-new festive experiences for a new generation.

The North Pole Nursery officially opens with a community celebration on December 6th. Families can expect a fully transformed space with fresh-cut Fraser Firs standing tall, white lights, handcrafted wreaths and garland, themed décor, activities for kids, photo opportunities with Santa himself, holiday treats, and a full lineup of Christmas cheer. It’s an invitation to step into the season, revisit treasured memories and build new ones with the people you love most.

This December, Liberty Landscape Supply isn’t just selling trees. They’re carrying forward a Jacksonville tradition rooted in decades of holiday joy — one started by Lou Trad, kept alive by generations of customers, and now reimagined for the future through the North Pole Nursery.
